Cuboid Syndrome

by admin on June 10, 2010

Cuboid syndrome is an overuse type injury that occurs on the outside of the foot. Cuboid syndrome is due to too much movement of the cuboid bone when the peroneus longus muscle contracts. The tendon of this muscle uses the cuboid as the pulley for it to pass around. As the muscle contracts it tries to sublux the cuboid and move it out of place. Normally the cuboid is very stable and this is not a problem, however in some people it moves too much resulting in cuboid syndrome. The symptoms of this start as a small ache on the outside of the foot, but later become painful and restrict activities. The initial treatment for cuboid syndrome is cuboid manipulation to correct the subluxed cuboid. Low dye strapping is also often used to stabilise the joints. Long term the treatment for cuboid syndrome is foot orthotics.
