Cracks in the skin around the heel are unsightly and can be very painful. Often the skin around the heel is dry and hard and this predisposes to cracked heels (also called heel fissures). Once the dry skin has split, the cracked heel is very unlikely to heel and the split will continue to pull on the good skin below and tear that. This can bleed and be very painful. In the worse cases of cracked heels, an infection can develop. Wearing open heel shoes are also a problem as they allow the fat pad under the skin to expand out sideways under the heel. The best way to treat cracked heels is to have the hard thick skin regularly debrided by a Podiatrist and use emollients to keep the skin supple and flexible. In some cases a heel cup may be heeded to keep the fat bad under the heel and from expanding out sideways. Wearing closed in shoes is also helpful in preventing cracked heels.
